happiness is just a jump to the left…

French philosopher Voltaire (1694-1778) is credited with saying, “I have chosen to be happy because it is good for my health.”

Hundreds of years before modern technology and scientific studies began to support Voltaire’s suspicion, humankind knew intrinsically that happiness is not only good for the soul but good for the body.

“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times,

if one only remembers to turn on the light.” Albus Dumbledore

Today, numerous scientific studies support that happiness and laughter have a positive effect on both physical and mental health. The Harvard School of Public Health published an article entitled Happiness & health that documents some of these studies. Immunity and decreased risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes have all been linked to a positive state of mind.

This week in celebration of Halloween, massage and esthetics students and staff at the Elizabeth Grady School had the opportunity to directly experience the physical and mental benefits of simply having a good time. It was a palpable experience of how very much happiness is good for your health! Sometimes you just need to take a jump to the left and a step to the right…
